FAQ's
All of our biltong is made using fresh, halal grass -fed beef - and it is made without preservatives or nitrates. We take pride in offering a pure, healthy product made without any additives.
We take as much care as possible in trying to achieve a consistent flavour output between batches. However due to the nature of the product please expect the moisture content and flavour intensity to vary between pieces, and between batches also.
Before you continue, YES...all of our products are halal. We source all of our halal beef from Liffey Meats, Ireland. This is NOT a HMC product.
1. How long will my biltong last?
We recommend customers to open the vacuum seal pack within 30 days of batch date
We further recommend for the biltong to be consumed immedietly of opening the vacuum seal pack and transferring the contents into the white Mylar pouch.
2. How do I know my biltong has gone bad?
Your biltong will be safe to eat as long as there are no signs of mould growth.
It is expected for mould to grow on the biltong once opened as a result of the moisture content within the biltong, and exposure to oxygen, humidity and heat sources.
3. How can I make my biltong last longer?
Upon opening the vacuum seal pack, empty the contents into the pouch bag provided straight away.
Do not leave the biltong in the vacuum seal pack after opening as this causes the biltong to go bad in as soon as within 24 hours of opening.
We recommend to open and shuffle the pack daily in order to circulate fresh air inside the pack. This slows the rate at which mould growth will occur.
Other storage options include;
- Store biltong in a glass jar
- Wrap biltong in tissue, or place in a brown paper bag, and keep in the fridge
- Freezing the vacuum sealed biltong. If you freeze biltong and it is not vacuum sealed, you risk causing freezer burn. This may impact the taste and texture of the product upon thawing, but it will still be suitable for consumption.
4. What happens if I leave my biltong in the vacuum seal bag once opened?
Your biltong can potentially spoil in as little as 24 hours as the plastic causes too much condensation, and will incur mould growth.
To avoid this, transfer the contents from the vacuum seal bag to the pouch bag, and consume within 3 days.
Or, use the alternative storage options provided above.
5. How should I store my biltong?
Keep biltong in a cool, dry environment away from any sources of heat, light and humidity. E.g. a cupboard or drawer.
Once there are visible signs of mould, this indicates that the biltong is no longer fit for consumption and it should be thrown away.
